Week of June 26th to June 29th (Last Week of School)

 Hello All, This week was our last together, and I am so thankful for how hard the students worked, while working together and solving problems and challenges they faced. We finished our mythology unit with myth posters, and worked on our math skills through the math game prodigy every day. We have also been doing building challenges, lots of outdoor play, and other fun activities. I hope you all have an amazing summer, and thank you for being a great community for our students, and I hope everyone has a great next year in grade 6! -Mr. Junaid. 

Week of June 19th to June 23rd

 Hello All, This week, we have been wrapping up our studies, preparing to finish things off going into more of an activity week next week for the last week! In math, we have been playing the math game prodigy, which the students have been enjoying a lot this year, to practice their math skills in areas such as probability, multiplication, division and rounding. In social and science, we have been exploring games and articles from the website https://gradefive.mrpolsky.com/. This site is great to further engage students in multiple curricula. Lastly, in ELA we have been working on our myth writing, finishing our rough copies this week, with good copy posters due early next week. I hope you all have a great weekend!  -Mr. Junaid   

Week of June 12th to 16th

 Hello Everyone! This week we have been busy working on our math posters to show our knowledge of estimation. The students got to go on a "shopping spree" and find prices of items they would like to buy online, and then they calculated their totals, and did their calculations using the rounding strategies they have learned to see which one would be the most accurate. In science, we have been finishing our look back at wetlands, working on our projects looking at a wetland creature and their environment. In social studies, we have been continuing our journey into the exploration of Canada, specifically studying the creation and separation of Nunavut. Lastly, in ELA, we have been studying myths as part of our fiction unit, with the students working on sentence building and frames for myth writing, going into planning and writing their own myth next week. Week of June 5th to 9th

 Hello All! This week, we have been wrapping up our story good copies, and will be moving onto mythology and other fiction topics in the next coming weeks before the year ends! We are far into our wetlands adventures in science, and the students have been doing well researching wetlands animals. In math, we are working on our estimation project, which is allowing the students to go on hypothetical shopping sprees, and then adding up their totals and using estimation strategies to calculate which will be the closest to the actual total. Lastly, in social studies, we are finishing our time capsule project, along with our social studies scripts, and are excited for our gallery walk coming soon! Have a great weekend everyone! Week of May 29th - June 2nd 2023

Hello All! I hope you have had a great week. We have been busy starting to wrap up the year with finishing projects and new units. This week in ELA we have started working on typing our good copies for our story writing unit, with some fun mythology reading and writing after this to end the year. In science, we are coming back around to wetlands, where the students are researching different wetlands, animals and plants for preparation of a poster project highlighting one wetland animal of their choice with their ecosystem. In social, we have been splitting our time working on the history and impact of World War 1 and 2, as well as writing up our time capsule project for the gallery walk coming up for the school in mid June! Lastly, in math, we have ended our probability unit, and are now moving on to estimation, being a great applicable skills because people use it every day when buying things or budgeting. Week of May 22nd to May 26th

 Hello All! This week we have been busy working on and peer editing our ELA rough drafts for our stories, with the goal to write the stories on the computers next week! In social studies, we have been continuing our exploration into stories that shaped Canada, specifically with World War 1 and the Great Depression. In Math, we have been working on probability and statistics, with our anchor charts for this unit underway! In health we have been focusing on nutrition this week, the students have done some abstract art work, and as seen in the photo below, we have been able to enjoy a big game of capture the flag! Week of May 15th to 19th

 Hello All! I hope you have all had a great week,  even with the challenges with the smoke in the air. This week, we dived deep into probability, with double bar graphs, terms such as certain, likely, impossible, etc, as well as first hand and second hand data. We will be doing some more review, working on our anchor charts, then we will go into estimation the week after next. We got to grow our own crystals and make slime in classroom chemistry, the slime was led by one of our students, as seen in the picture below and it was a blast! In social studies, we have kept on with discovering the hardships of the history of Canada, finishing off with the famous 5 this week. Lastly, we have been working hard on our story writing rough drafts, with the hopes of peer editing at the end of next week or early into the week after that. Week of May 8th to May 12th

 Hello All! This week, we have been busy starting our time capsule project for our school time capsule from 1996, each student has been put into groups, and they have chosen items that interest them. Eventually, they will be leading a gallery walk in the gym in mid June, with the items having summaries and research. We have also ended our Canadian Immigration story unit, and will be now moving onto the shaping of Canada. In Math, we have been having fun starting our probability unit, with likely, unlikely, certain and impossible situations, and our probability dice roll and rock paper scissors activity. Next week, we will be continuing probability learning about bar graphs. In science, we have been wrapping up our classroom chemistry unit, and will be doing our crystal borax experiment on Monday. Week of May 1st to May 4th

Hello All! This week was a busy week in our classroom. The students have been enjoying prodigy math games online for studying for their fractions and decimals quiz on Monday. We halve also been putting on our lab coats and conducting fun experiments for our classroom chemistry unit, getting ready to end our unit in the next few weeks. Our social studies has had us continuing our exploration of immigration into Canada stories from all kinds of different cultures. Lastly, our story writing has been progressing well, breaking down all aspects of a story, with our own story writing process beginning next week. Week of April 24th to 28th

Hello again everyone! This week was a busy week, but we are progressing really well! In math, we have covered fractions and percents, and will be moving into review next week before a small quiz! After this, we will be moving on to statistics and probability! In science, we have started our classroom chemistry unit, and the students have had a blast with their solutions and mixtures! In social, we tried working with history scripts, and it was a lot of fun from what they had said! I always want to make subjects as fun and engaging as I can. Lastly, in ELA we have been working hard at our story writing, breaking down all parts of the story before writing and editing our stories in a couple weeks! Week of April 17th to 21st

Hi everyone! We have had a busy week! We transitioned after our math test on division to doing decimals, and at the end of the week we started to cover fractions. I am proud of all of the students, as this is not easy work, but they are doing great! We are finishing up our magnet unit this week, moving into classroom chemistry next week, which I know all of the students are really excited for! We have gotten into our story writing unit, and have been covering the introduction part of the story in depth, next week, we will be moving into the rising action part of the story. Lastly, in social studies, we have been continuing our deep dive into Canada and it's history of immigration with story perspectives from people who have immigrated into Canada. Week of April 10th to 14th

 Hello All! This week, my grade 5s wrote their first unit test with me for multiplication and division, and I am so proud of them because the mark are looking great! We have also began working with decimals, converting them from remainders, and will continue with fractions next week. For science, we had our first official experiment using a lab report according to the scientific method. The kids were happy to have some time with the magnets, and this knowledge of how to complete a lab will serve us well for our next unit, which is classroom chemistry, being heavy in labs. For social studies, we are beginning our stories of Canada unit, where we have looked at Francophone and British immigration influence, as well as some First Nations and Metis mapping and legends. Lastly, we have been finishing our poetry books for our poetry unit, and we will be starting story writing next week! I hope you are all have a great weekend with your families! -Mr. Junaid. 

Week of April 3rd to 6th

This week, we settled back in from spring break, starting our poetry books before we begin our story writing unit. In social, we have begun our exploration of the history of immigration in Canada. Science had us beginning our short magnets unit before we begin classroom chemistry. Lastly, we have been studying and playing multiplication and division jeopardy to prepare for Tuesday! Week of March 20th to 24th

This week, before spring break, we were working hard to finish our science, social, and math projects. We completed our exploration of circuits, division, and black history month. The students all worked really hard on these projects, and their efforts show! We will be moving onto test prep for division, the history of immigration into Canada, magnetism, and our poetry book project after spring break. Enjoy the break everyone!

Week of March 13th to 17th

  This week, we continued our division anchor charts, the students will be moving into test prep next week, for our test after spring break. In ELA we continued with our smilie and onomatopoeia poems, moving into hyperbole and other styles next week. In science, we are building our circuit devices, and the students are getting creative with their carousels, radios, and robots. Lastly, we have been working on presentation prep for our presentations next week, before we learn about our next social section, which is the history of immigration into Canada. Week of March 6th to 10th

This week, we continued our exploration of poetry with haikus and smilies. The kids were very creative, and had a lot of fun with them! For social studies, we are wrapping up our black history month projects, and moving on to practicing our presentations for next week. In science, we are keeping up with our dive into circuits, with a new project of creating a device or object that uses circuits. Lastly in math, we explored short and long division, with anchor charts starting next week, and some lessons in test taking for our math unit test coming up at the end of March. Week of Feb. 27th to Mar 3rd

  Happy Friday! This week, we. navigated through a set of circuit stations, where the students got to explore parallel and series circuits. Next week, we will begin our research for our project yet to come! In math, we have continued with division, being quite successful in understandings and fluency. We even started exploring 2 by 4 with long division, despite having only started it a couple weeks ago. In social studies, we wrapped up the projects for black history month, and will practice presentations next week. Lastly, in ELA we kept up with our poetry unit, exploring the color poem this week. We will continue on with alliteration next week. The first picture is of our animal mash up art! We will plan to display these hopefully in time for parent teacher interviews. Week of Feb. 20th-24th, 2023

 This week, in Mr. Junaid's Class This week, we focused on continuing our short division practice before moving into long division in the next week or two depending on how we are progressing. In LA, we have been focusing on poetry, with cinquain and acrostic being the types of poetry studied. We will move onto colour poetry next week. In social studies, we kept working on our presentations for Canadian black history month, and we will finish and present these projects next week. Lastly, we reviewed circuits, but will be continuing review and application next week. The photos show some puppet making from the residency here at the school, as well as some math games.   Welcome Back to Mr. Junaid's Blog! This week, we had a short week due to teachers convention. A show what you know will be given in routine again next week, as well as some reading assessments for the students! We are continuing to focus on division, practicing the strategies such as grouping, arrays, repeated subtraction and halving. The students are feeling more and more confident as we go on. We continued our poetry unit, we students beginning to design their own poems through the acrostic, and cinquain style. We also continued with our circuits unit in science, looking at online circuit building resources while we are getting our new circuit equipment in. Lastly, the students continued with their celebrating Canadian black history month. The students are presenting a biography on a figure of their choice, and they can do this through Minecraft world building, posters, websites, books, etc.  As seen in the photos, we also had some time to explore student passions, with on...

Welcome to Mr. Junaid's Grade 5 Class

  Welcome to Mr. Junaid's Class! This week, we learned about Canadian black history month, circuits, poetry, and we reviewed multiplication and practiced through games. We also took some time for snack, but watched educational documentaries from national geographic for kids. We also had body break dancing, which led the kids to be much more prepared for their learning. We finished off with our weekly show what you know, and had a fun Friday. Next week we will continue our poetry, circuits and social studies learning, but also will be starting to look at division. We will be at this for 6-8 weeks, depending on student progress, and we will get lots of practice so we can feel more comfortable with it.   -Mr. Junaid.
